Birmingham neighbors gather for Meet Your Neighbors events to strengthen community ties

When Caily Schwartz and her husband Reilly opened their Crestwood South home to a Meet Your Neighbors gathering on Saturday, they helped turn strangers into friends. The event, which drew about 40 neighbors over a three‑hour period, is one of several community‑building gatherings organized across Birmingham.

Program background and funding

The Meet Your Neighbors series is an outgrowth of the Iron Hills Folk School, a Birmingham nonprofit established last year under the Sand Mountain Cooperative. The program received grant money from the national With Neighbors nonprofit, which allocated between $60 and $200 to each participating household to cover modest expenses for food, drinks, or venue rentals.

“Our goal is to help reduce isolation and build community in Birmingham,” said Natalie Crawford, a member of the program’s organizing committee. “We provide advice on finding resources, and many events receive food and drink donations from local businesses.”

How the Crestwood South event unfolded

Schwartz handled most of the promotion, posting about the gathering on the program’s website calendar, Facebook, and Instagram, and sending an email to the neighborhood association. She also went door‑to‑door, distributing flyers while wearing a reflective vest and headlamp to ensure safety after dark.

“I was careful not to appear creepy,” Schwartz explained. “Everyone has Ring cameras now, so I made sure to turn off my headlamp at each door.”

Neighbors arrived throughout the morning, enjoying coffee, doughnuts, and casual conversation. Long‑time resident Theresa Rumore Nabors, who grew up in Crestwood South, described the gathering as a reminder of the neighborhood’s past while also highlighting the influx of younger families.

“It’s just totally turned over with a lot of young people,” Nabors said. “We’re all living in nice houses, but we’re not building community. This is a new way to bring us out of our houses and phones and into real connections.”

Upcoming events and future goals

Following the success of the Crestwood South gathering, the program has scheduled additional events in Eastwood and Crestline Gardens (Saturday, Oct. 10, 8:30‑10:30 a.m.), South East Lake (Oct. 24), and Ensley (late October or early November). Each event will feature simple refreshments and opportunities for neighbors to meet face‑to‑face.

Crawford emphasized that the ideal outcome is ongoing interaction beyond a single gathering. “We’re encouraging hosts to make these events recurring so neighbors continue to meet and support one another,” she said.

Why community events matter

According to Crawford, many Birmingham neighborhoods suffer from a declining sense of belonging. “People don’t have as much pride in their neighborhoods,” she noted. “They don’t know as many people who live near them, and that creates isolation.” By fostering regular, low‑cost gatherings, the Meet Your Neighbors program aims to reverse that trend and strengthen the social fabric of the city.

Local businesses have also benefited, providing donations that help keep costs low while gaining exposure to nearby residents. The collaborative model demonstrates how nonprofit initiatives, modest public funding, and private generosity can work together to revitalize community life.
