Northlake residents will soon have a hometown semi‑professional hockey team to cheer for. The Texas Scorpions, owned and operated by the Mignault family of Flower Mound, are preparing for their inaugural season at the brand‑new Children’s Health StarCenter Multisport.
Family‑run operation
Coach Danny Mignault brings years of coaching experience to the bench, while his wife Amaya handles administrative duties, media relations and social‑media outreach. Their son, Daniel Ernest Mignault, leads production efforts and also skates for the team. “We kind of live at the ice rink at this point,” Daniel said, noting that the venture is a true family project.
Affordable entertainment for all
General‑admission tickets start at $15, with children six and younger admitted free. Parking is complimentary, and military members and first responders receive a $3 discount per ticket. Local sponsorships help keep prices low, ensuring the experience remains budget‑friendly for the close‑knit community.
“This is a very niche area, and it’s a close‑knit community. They want something that is their own — something to go visit on a Friday or Saturday with the entire family that’s below budget,” Danny Mignault explained.
Game‑day experience
The Scorpions plan to make each game a spectacle. Massive metal arches with LED lighting, spark machines and a wrapped, illuminated ATV will greet fans as they enter the arena. After the final buzzer, players will mingle with supporters in the on‑site restaurant, and public skating sessions will follow Friday night games, allowing fans to share the ice with the athletes.
Community‑focused roster
When assembling the roster, the Mignaults emphasized character as well as skill. “We’re very selective and want to bring the right bunch of men into the locker room that are respectful and will be good ambassadors for the sport, the team and the Town of Northlake,” Danny said. Many players balance hockey with full‑time careers and families, reinforcing the team’s local roots.
Mayor’s support
Northlake Mayor Brian Montini, a hockey fan whose own sons play the sport, helped secure the team’s home. “It is very exciting to have a semi‑professional team like the Texas Scorpions choose Northlake as their home,” Montini said. He praised the Scorpions for already engaging with schools, town staff, police and the local independent school district.
Special events
One of the early highlights will be a First Responders Weekend matchup against the New York City Fire Department Hockey Team. The charity game, scheduled for Friday at 7 p.m. and Saturday at 7:30 p.m., aims to draw a sell‑out crowd and honor local heroes.
For the Mignault family, success will be measured by more than wins or attendance. Their goal is to give southern Denton County residents a team they can call their own—a source of pride, fellowship and lasting community ties.
