Texas School Police Officer’s Confrontation with Teen Raises Concerns

A recent incident at Judson High School in Converse, Texas, has raised concerns about the use of physical force by school police officers. Officer Marc Laue was involved in a confrontation with 15-year-old Jeremiah Johnson, who was accused of pushing an assistant principal.

Incident Details

According to body camera footage, Officer Laue grabbed Jeremiah’s arms and backpack, and the boy pushed away. The officer then wrapped his arms around Jeremiah and took him to the floor. Jeremiah was handcuffed and taken to the school police office, where Officer Laue allegedly used physical force to subdue him.

The incident has sparked concerns about the use of physical force in schools, particularly against vulnerable students. Jeremiah’s family and advocates have raised questions about the officer’s actions and whether they were justified.

Response from School and Law Enforcement

The school district and law enforcement agency have launched an investigation into the incident. Officer Laue has been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.

The incident has also raised questions about the training and protocols in place for school police officers. Texas has spent billions of dollars installing police officers in public schools since 2022, but some advocates argue that more needs to be done to ensure that officers are equipped to handle situations like this.
