Texas Sanctuary Receives Life-Changing Dental Care

In-Sync Exotics Wildlife Rescue & Educational Center in Wylie, Texas, recently welcomed the return of the Dental Coalition for Conservation, whose team of volunteer veterinary dental specialists, dentists, veterinarians, technicians, and support staff donated their time and expertise to provide advanced dental care for several of the sanctuary’s rescued big cats.

Dental Care for Rescued Big Cats

Dental disease is one of the most common health challenges faced by captive exotic felines. Broken teeth, infections, and oral pain can significantly impact a cat’s quality of life, making regular dental examinations and treatment essential. The Dental Coalition for Conservation provides not only dental treatment, but training on dental disease specific to exotic animals.

This year’s dental clinical focused on advanced dental treatment, including root canals for eight residents: tigers Salem, Leah, Gus, Shilo, and Kenobi; cougar Sage; lion Madiba; and bobcat Mary. Over two days, the team performed comprehensive oral examinations and a variety of procedures, including root canals and preventative dental care.

“Providing dental care for a tiger, lion, or other exotic cat is far more complex than a routine veterinary visit,” said Vicky Keahey, Founder and President of In-Sync Exotics. “The expertise and generosity of the Dental Coalition for Conservation allows us to address serious dental issues that could otherwise cause chronic pain and impact an animal’s overall health. Their support is invaluable to the cats in our care.”

In-Sync Exotics extends its gratitude to the volunteers, veterinarians, dental professionals, and support staff who made this mission possible and helped ensure the continued health and welfare of the sanctuary’s residents.
