Mexico Prepares for World Cup

The city of Mexico is gearing up to host the World Cup, with the national team’s green jerseys and digital billboards promoting the matches on full display. The country is expected to generate roughly $3.7 billion in revenue from the event, with tourism alone projected to bring in almost half that amount to Mexico City.

Local Businesses Prepare for Influx of Tourists

In Mexico City’s main plaza, El Zocalo, shops, kiosks, and restaurants are filled with colorful World Cup memorabilia. Merchants are selling everything from soccer ball key chains to plush toys of Mexican presidents wearing the national team’s jersey.

Restaurant manager Miguel Laguna expects to see a 45-50% increase in customers during the month-long tournament. Meanwhile, street performers like Juan Carlos, one of the city’s many organ grinders, are also expecting an increase in business.

Cartels and Organized Crime Expected to Profit

However, cartels and organized crime groups are also expected to benefit from the World Cup, with extortion being one of their most profitable strategies. They are likely to target businesses that cater to tourists, such as restaurants, night clubs, and hotels.

Additionally, scammers are expected to profit from counterfeit items and services, including tickets to the matches. The Mexican government has issued warnings to the public to avoid unreliable third-party vendors and to only buy from official or accredited sources.

Not Everyone Will Benefit

Despite the expected boost in revenue, not all Mexicans will benefit from the World Cup. Small businesses like kiosk manager Nayeli’s may be pushed to the side, and some hotels and rental apartments are not seeing the boom they had hoped for.

Tickets to the matches are also very expensive, with prices ranging from $3,000 to $10,000, making it impossible for many Mexicans to attend. The general minimum wage in Mexico is roughly $18 a day.
