Texas Primary Runoffs Conclude: Key Races to Watch

Texans are casting their votes today in pivotal primary runoff elections, marking the conclusion of a particularly dynamic political season in the Lone Star State. These runoffs are necessary after no candidate secured a majority in the March primaries, and they feature several significant statewide, congressional, and legislative contests.

Senate Showdown

The Republican runoff for the U.S. Senate seat is drawing significant attention, as incumbent Senator John Cornyn faces off against Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton. This race has seen over $135 million in advertising, culminating in a last-minute endorsement for Paxton from former President Donald Trump. Both candidates have never lost an election, and the winner will challenge Democratic nominee James Talarico in the general election.

Cornyn, a self-described Reagan Republican, emphasizes the importance of maintaining GOP control in Texas. Paxton, aligning himself with Trump’s Make America Great Again movement, argues he is better suited to challenge the Republican establishment.

Attorney General Race

The race to replace Ken Paxton as Attorney General is also fiercely contested. On the Republican side, Galveston State Senator Mayes Middleton and U.S. Representative Chip Roy are vying for the position. Middleton, who brands himself as “MAGA Mayes,” has invested heavily in his campaign, while Roy highlights his extensive legal experience. The Texas Attorney General’s office plays a crucial role in advancing conservative causes through the courts, making this a critical seat for the GOP to retain.

Democrats are also holding a runoff to determine their candidate for Attorney General, with State Senator Nathan Johnson and former Galveston Mayor Joe Jaworski competing for the nomination.

Railroad Commission Contest

The GOP primary for a seat on the Texas Railroad Commission, which regulates the state’s oil and gas industry, has become unexpectedly contentious. Former Tarrant County GOP Chair Bo French is challenging incumbent Commissioner Jim Wright. French’s controversial statements have drawn criticism, while Wright has secured endorsements from top GOP officials. The outcome of this race could potentially open the door for a Democratic victory in a statewide office.
