Texas House Forms Subcommittee on Maternal Health, Menopause, Evidence‑Based Medicine

In Austin, the Texas House took a concrete step toward addressing women’s health issues when Speaker Dustin Burrows named Representative Katrina Pierson as chair of the newly created Subcommittee on Maternal Health, Menopause and Access to Evidence‑Based Medicine. The appointment was announced last week as part of a broader set of interim charges for the 90th Legislature, targeting hormone health, maternal nutrition, newborn coverage and other barriers that Texas women face.

Subcommittee officially established

Today, House Committee on Public Health Chairman Gary VanDeaver formally established the subcommittee, clearing the way for Chairwoman Pierson and its members to begin work on the outlined charges. The subcommittee’s mandate includes reviewing existing policies, hearing from patients, physicians and experts, and proposing actionable solutions that align with evidence‑based medical practice.

Leadership and membership

Representative Katrina Pierson, who represents House District 33 covering Rockwall County and parts of southern Collin County, will lead the effort. Pierson also serves on the House Committees on Public Health; Homeland Security, Public Safety & Veterans’ Affairs; and the Subcommittee on Disease Prevention & Women’s and Children’s Health. Joining her on the subcommittee are Representative Elizabeth “Liz” Campos, a Democrat from San Antonio, and Representative Joanne Shofner, a Republican from Nacogdoches, reflecting a bipartisan approach to the health concerns at hand.

Focus on evidence‑based solutions

In a statement, Pierson expressed gratitude for the opportunity, saying, “I’m grateful to Speaker Burrows and Chairman VanDeaver for the chance to dig into women’s health issues that have gone overlooked for far too long.” She emphasized that the subcommittee will prioritize real‑world health needs over partisan debates, aiming to close gaps in care and advance practical, evidence‑based solutions for Texas women.

Connection to the Texas Women’s Health Initiative

The subcommittee builds on Pierson’s recently announced Texas Women’s Health Initiative, a program designed to set aside political wrangling and focus on everyday health needs of women across the state. The initiative seeks to address gaps in care, improve access to proven treatments, and ensure that policy decisions are grounded in scientific evidence.

Implications for Texas families

By concentrating on maternal health, menopause and evidence‑based medicine, the subcommittee aims to support families at critical life stages. Improved maternal nutrition and newborn coverage can directly benefit parents and children, while clearer guidance on menopause care may help women navigate a significant health transition with better resources.

Next steps

The subcommittee will hold hearings, solicit testimony from medical professionals and community members, and develop recommendations for the full House Health Committee. Stakeholders are encouraged to submit input during the interim period, ensuring that a broad range of perspectives shape the final policy proposals.

As the 90th Legislature progresses, the work of this subcommittee will be closely watched by families, health providers and advocacy groups who share a common interest in safeguarding the health and well‑being of Texas women.
