PGCPS Superintendent Outlines Growth Plan and AI Initiative for 2026‑27

Prince George’s County Public Schools (PGCPS) kicked off the 2026‑27 school year on Aug. 24 with Superintendent Dr. Shawn Joseph laying out a comprehensive growth strategy. In an interview with The Washington Informer, Joseph emphasized an “acceleration imperative,” saying the district will focus sharply on reading and mathematics to boost student achievement.

Strategic plan: Forward by Design

The new strategic plan, titled “Forward by Design,” calls for several coordinated initiatives. First, a county‑wide behavioral management program will be introduced in all 29 schools. The program centers on teaching students seven mindsets intended to help them pursue their aspirations.

Artificial intelligence education

Joseph also announced a pilot for artificial intelligence (AI) instruction at the high‑school level. Starting in January, seniors will receive access to generative AI tools, including Google’s Gemini, after a semester of instruction on AI ethics and responsible use. Teachers will receive new technology to support classroom integration, but access will be limited to high‑school students who use the tools appropriately.

Extended school day

To comply with Maryland state law, PGCPS will add five minutes to the daily bell schedule. Joseph noted the change will have minimal impact on transportation, with buses still departing and arriving on time.

Professional development focus

Educators will receive targeted professional development centered on the science of reading and mathematics instruction. The district is adopting a “teaching and learning framework” that provides prescriptive guidance on effective practices, drawing on current research and best‑practice models.

Dual enrollment and apprenticeship opportunities

All 25 PGCPS high schools continue to offer dual‑enrollment courses through Prince George’s Community College, Bowie State University and the University of Maryland Global Campus. Joseph highlighted ongoing collaboration with county and federal leaders, including Rep. Glenn Ivey, Sen. Angela Alsobrooks and County Executive Aisha Braveboy, to expand apprenticeship programs and prepare students for high‑paying jobs in emerging sectors such as quantum research and federal contracting.

Looking ahead

With more than 200 schools serving the county, Joseph stressed that the district is ready to execute the plan and provide “access and opportunity for all children.” He urged families and community members to watch the implementation and hold the system accountable for measurable improvement.
