The annual Texas High School Coaches Association Convention was held in Houston, with over 17,000 coaches and athletes in attendance. The convention addressed various challenges facing high school coaches, including budget cuts, mental health, and extremely hot weather.
Coaches and Athletes Share Their Thoughts
Justyce Long, a basketball player at Benjamin O. Davis High School, expressed her appreciation for the leadership of a good coach. "Without a good coach, a dedicated coach, it's hard to get where you want to get with the game of basketball," she said. Eliot Allen, athletic director at Bastrop ISD, emphasized the importance of coaching in the educational process. "It's not just about the performance that you see on the field. It's about the education of an entire child. We are part of the educational process," he said.
The convention included press conferences highlighting key topics, including the Texas heat. Joe Martin, executive director for the Texas High School Coaches Association, discussed the collaboration with UIL to provide coaches with a tool kit for heat-related issues. Dell Children's is also providing tools to address coach and athlete mental health issues.
Initiatives and Collaborations
Martin explained the initiative called Educate, Excel and Play, which promotes the importance of community-based and education-based athletics. "We talk all the time about the importance of community-based and education-based athletics. It's what keeps Texas, Texas," he said. The convention demonstrated the commitment of coaches and school staff to addressing the challenges facing high school athletes and promoting the well-being of students.
