The Pentagon has removed four American troops killed in recent fighting between the U.S. and Iran from its official casualty count. The troops are now listed in a new category called “Overseas Operations”.
Renewed Fighting
The U.S. and Iran have been exchanging fire in a bid to control the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial waterway. The Pentagon has provided little information about military strategy and casualties since the renewed hostilities began.
The four troops were killed during fighting that resumed after a ceasefire agreement was signed in mid-June. The Pentagon’s top spokesman, Sean Parnell, said the reported drop in casualty figures was a “temporary data disruption”.
The new “Overseas Operations” category lists casualties starting July 7, when Iran struck three merchant vessels in the Strait of Hormuz. The U.S. launched strikes in response, and the two countries have been exchanging fire since then.
