Utah parents finally received news that their daughter, Kylie Arellano, is safe. The teenager, who vanished from Garden City, Utah, on May 29, 2025, at age 15, was rescued on Nov. 1, 2026 from a home in Huntington, Oregon. Federal prosecutors have charged 39‑year‑old Adam Hunter Harmel with kidnapping, violent assault and sexual exploitation.
Alleged crimes
According to a criminal complaint filed in the U.S. District Court for the District of Utah, Harmel allegedly held Arellano captive in the basement of his Oregon residence for more than 500 days. The complaint says he kept her confined to a bed in the basement, forced her to sleep against a wall, and kept a knife under his pillow as a threat.
Investigators allege Harmel repeatedly beat the teen, hit her, and forced her to remove her orthodontic braces with pliers so she could not be identified. The complaint also states he sexually assaulted her on multiple occasions in 2025 and 2026 and expressed a desire to start a family with her.
How the teen was found
Arellano’s rescue came after she managed to contact another minor while playing the online game “Among Us.” The two moved their conversation to a different social‑media app, where Arellano disclosed her location and that she was being held against her will. Her mother alerted the FBI, which monitored a video call on Nov. 1. During the call, Arellano showed investigators a knife that Harmel kept under his pillow and other evidence confirming her claims.
Oregon State Police and federal agents responded that same day, entered the home, and took Arellano to a medical facility for treatment. A search of the residence uncovered knives, BB guns and sexual lubricant, further supporting the allegations.
Background of the investigation
Authorities say Harmel first met Arellano on Snapchat in May 2025, claiming a disability involving his hips and offering her money to travel to Oregon. He allegedly drove from Oregon to Perry, Utah, to pick her up, threw her phone into a river in Logan Canyon, and told her she could not leave his home.
A housemate at the Oregon residence reported that Harmel claimed he had brought home a “new girlfriend” from Utah. The housemate did not see the teen until about two months after her arrival, when she ran back into the basement.
Legal proceedings
Harmel was arrested during a traffic stop in Ontario, Oregon, and is scheduled to make his initial appearance in federal court on Wednesday. The federal complaint outlines charges of kidnapping across state lines, violent assault, sexual exploitation of a minor and possession of weapons.
The case underscores the dangers of online grooming and the importance of parental vigilance. Arellano’s mother had held out hope for more than a year after finding her daughter’s jacket in the driveway and her phone turned off. The breakthrough came only after a tip from the parent of another player in the online game.
Community response
Local leaders in both Utah and Oregon have expressed relief that Arellano is safe and called for continued education about online safety. Law‑enforcement agencies emphasized that victims often lack the means to contact authorities, making community awareness critical.
The investigation remains ongoing, and federal prosecutors may seek additional charges as more evidence is reviewed.
