A 15-year-old East Hampton girl has died after experiencing a medical emergency while paddleboarding in Eastford on Sunday afternoon.
According to the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP), the incident occurred at Crystal Pond, where the girl was pulled from the water by a good Samaritan.
She received medical treatment ashore before being taken to Day Kimball Hospital, where she was pronounced deceased.
A member of the Crystal Pond Park Commission described the incident as ‘very tragic news’ and emphasized the importance of safety while visiting the pond.
‘There’s no lifeguard on duty. We have a very shallow swim area so people can walk in very slowly so it doesn’t get over their head quickly,’ said Chuck Lee of the Crystal Pond Park Commission.
Parents and kids at the pond were aware of the importance of water safety, with one parent, Jaelynn McCabe of Killingly, stating, ‘It’s scary. I have three kids and water safety is super important. Wearing a life jacket and always being aware of your surroundings.’
A 13-year-old boy, Carlos Marquez of Ashford, also emphasized the importance of safety, saying, ‘Make sure I never go too far. Make sure there’s always an adult seeing me or watching me.’
The office of the Chief Medical Examiner will work to determine the cause and manner of death.
