A shooting at a school in Thailand has left five teachers dead and more than 30 people injured. The suspected gunman, a 14-year-old student, stormed the Debsirin Nonthaburi School and opened fire before turning the weapon on himself.

The suspect had also allegedly killed his grandmother and grandfather in their home before the school shooting. Police said the suspect had searched for and viewed websites related to mass shootings prior to the attack.

The Thai prime minister indicated that the attack could have been much worse if the suspected gunman had continued his attack, as he still had more than 30 rounds of ammunition remaining. The prime minister also suggested that the suspect had been experiencing stress related to his studies.

The UN children’s agency, UNICEF, said the young age of the suspect raises ‘difficult questions’ for society and called for better mental health services for children in the wake of the attack.

Thailand’s Ministry of Education pledged tighter security measures at schools, including a fresh review of security procedures to prevent weapons and other dangerous items from being brought onto school premises.
