The San Antonio Food Bank is helping residents eat healthy on a budget. With one in five people in the San Antonio Food Bank region experiencing food insecurity, the nonprofit is providing resources to make nutritious meals affordable.
Healthy Recipes on a Budget
According to San Antonio Food Bank Interim Chief of Nutrition Becca Smith, the key to eating healthy on a budget is knowing how to use the food provided by the food bank. The nonprofit offers a variety of healthy foods, including fresh produce, canned goods, and whole grains.
The San Antonio Food Bank’s CHEF program provides exact recipes and teaching classes on how to make healthy meals. Smith shared two easy and affordable recipes that don’t require cooking or heating. The first recipe is an oatmeal cinnamon protein bite made with dried oats, rice cereal, sunflower butter, and dried non-fat milk. The second recipe is called Texas Caviar, a mixture of canned black beans, canned corn, chopped red bell pepper, and diced onion.
Both recipes are available on the food bank’s website, along with dozens of other low-cost and healthy recipes in English and Spanish. The San Antonio Food Bank is committed to helping residents make healthy choices, even on a limited budget.
