A 16-year-old Olathe girl is in critical condition after a pickup truck ran a red light and was hit by a tractor-trailer late Tuesday in southern Johnson County. The crash happened at the intersection of U.S. 169 Highway at 199th Street in Spring Hill.
According to the Kansas Highway Patrol’s online crash log, at approximately 10:50 p.m., a 2027 Ford F-250 Super Duty was being driven southbound on U.S. 169. The driver of the truck entered the left turn lane to go eastbound on 199th and ran a red light, and was struck by a 2025 Freightliner tractor-trailer that was traveling northbound.
The impact sent both vehicles off the highway and into the ditch on the northeast corner of the intersection. Firefighters from Johnson County Consolidated Fire District No. 1 arrived to report that the tractor-trailer was on its side and the heavily damaged pickup truck was well off the road.
Two teenagers were found inside the pickup truck. Troopers say a 15-year-old Spring Hill boy was driving and the 16-year-old Olathe girl was in the passenger’s seat. The driver of the tractor-trailer is a 63-year-old man from Reeds, Missouri, according to the Highway Patrol.
Firefighters worked for about 30 minutes to safely extricate all three people from their vehicles. Johnson County Med-Act paramedics transported the girl to an area hospital in critical condition. Both drivers were taken to area hospitals in stable condition. Troopers say both drivers sustained a “suspected serious injury.”
According to the Highway Patrol’s crash log, the teens were not wearing seatbelts. The driver of the tractor-trailer was wearing a seatbelt. Officers from the Spring Hill Police Department, along with deputies from the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office, also responded to the crash and assisted with traffic control.
The Kansas Department of Transportation was called out to assist with the extended closure of the northbound lanes as troopers worked to document the scene. All lanes reopened after 6:30 a.m. on Wednesday. Troopers continue to investigate the crash.
