Technical glitch at Warner Bros. Discovery temporarily knocks out CNN and HBO signals

On Monday, the East Coast experienced a sudden interruption of several major cable channels when a technical problem at Warner Bros. Discovery disrupted the signal for CNN, HBO, TNT, TBS and other properties. The outage began shortly after 12:00 p.m. Eastern and lasted for roughly half an hour.

What happened on air

During the midday broadcast of CNN’s “Inside Politics,” the program appeared to freeze before breaking into pixelated blocks of color and fragmented images. Viewers reported scrambled screens and loss of audio, prompting many to turn to social media for explanations.

At 12:51 p.m., anchor Dana Bash addressed the audience, saying, “Welcome back and we are back. There was a technical issue across Warner Bros. Discovery’s channels that resulted in losing our signal. We’re very sorry for the interruption.” The statement confirmed that the problem was network‑wide rather than isolated to a single affiliate.

Impact across platforms

Depending on the distribution method—cable, satellite, or streaming—the severity of the disruption varied. Some subscribers reported a brief loss of picture only, while others experienced a complete blackout of the affected channels. HBO, which was airing a scheduled movie at the time, also displayed the same pixelated distortion before returning to normal service.

Warner Bros. Discovery, the parent company that owns CNN, HBO, TNT, TBS and several other networks, released a brief statement describing the event as a “technical issue across Warner Bros. Discovery” without providing further technical details.

Industry context

Broadcast outages, while uncommon, can arise from a range of causes including equipment failure, software glitches, or problems with satellite uplinks. In this case, the rapid restoration suggests that engineers were able to isolate and correct the fault quickly.

For viewers, the incident underscores the reliance on complex infrastructure that delivers live television to millions of households. It also highlights the importance of having backup systems and contingency plans to minimize downtime.

What viewers can do

Subscribers who experienced prolonged issues were advised to contact their service providers for assistance. Most providers reported that the outage was resolved on their end once the network restored a stable feed.

As of the time of writing, all affected channels have returned to normal programming, and no further disruptions have been reported.

Looking ahead

Warner Bros. Discovery has not indicated whether a formal investigation will be conducted or if any preventive measures will be implemented to avoid future incidents. The company’s swift acknowledgment and apology were aimed at reassuring viewers and advertisers that the network remains committed to reliable service.
