The Tarrant County 5 Stones Taskforce is making strides in the fight against human trafficking by fostering community collaboration and education. This coalition, comprised of faith-based and secular organizations, aims to address the issue through awareness, training, policy advocacy, restoration, and reducing demand.
Community Efforts and Faith-Based Initiatives
Cheryl’s Voice, founded by LaTasha Williams, is a key member of the task force. The Fort Worth-based nonprofit provides resources to children and families affected by domestic violence and educates the community on preventing intimate partner violence among teens. Williams, who has personal ties to the issue, is also an assistant program manager of Tarrant County’s Domestic Violence Diversion Program.
The task force’s name is inspired by the biblical story of David and Goliath, symbolizing the community’s determination to tackle the giant issue of trafficking with faith and strategic action. The task force hosts monthly meetings open to the public, encouraging community involvement in addressing trafficking in Tarrant County.
Building a Network to Combat Trafficking
Since its inception in 2009, the task force has grown significantly. Founder Felicia Tallent, who previously worked with the Fort Worth Police Department, initiated conversations between law enforcement and community stakeholders to combat trafficking. By 2016, the task force became an official arm of local law enforcement, uniting over 40 members monthly to educate and support survivors.
Organizations like The Net, founded by Melissa Ice, and Rescue Her, led by Sarah Phillips, play crucial roles in supporting survivors and raising awareness. The Net offers financial literacy classes and job training, while Rescue Her engages with local churches, schools, and businesses to spread awareness.
Faith Communities Taking Action
Churches in Tarrant County are increasingly recognizing their role in combating human trafficking. Unbound Now, another task force member, partners with local churches to educate congregations and provide safe spaces for trafficking survivors. Director Sonya Brooks emphasizes the importance of faith communities in shining a light on the darkness of trafficking.
Through these collaborative efforts, the Tarrant County 5 Stones Taskforce continues to make a significant impact in the fight against human trafficking, demonstrating the power of community and faith-based initiatives in addressing this critical issue.
