Tampa Resident Falls Victim to Scam Impersonating Sheriff’s Office

A Tampa resident, Derek Haydt, recently fell victim to a sophisticated scam that cost him hundreds of dollars. The scammers impersonated the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office, using fake court documents and threats of arrest to convince Haydt to pay them through a cryptocurrency ATM.

Scam Details

Haydt received a call at work from someone claiming to be with the sheriff’s office, informing him of supposed warrants for his arrest due to missed court appearances. The scammers sent him documents with his personal information, making the scheme appear legitimate. They kept him on the phone for hours, using background noise to mimic a law enforcement environment.

The scammers instructed Haydt to pay a portion of his “bond” through what they described as a special government ATM, which was actually a Bitcoin ATM located in a South Tampa gas station. Despite his concerns, Haydt deposited about $800 before realizing it was a scam when the callers abruptly hung up.

Florida’s Scam Vulnerability

According to the Better Business Bureau (BBB), Florida is one of the top states for scams and fraud reports, often targeted due to its large retiree population and concentration of wealth. Bryan Oglesby from the BBB notes that scammers are using increasingly sophisticated tactics, including spoofed phone numbers and AI-generated materials.

Prevention Tips

The BBB advises that no legitimate law enforcement or government agency will request payment through Bitcoin ATMs, gift cards, or wire transfers. Such requests should be immediate red flags. Haydt has filed a police report but acknowledges the slim chances of recovering his money. He hopes sharing his experience will prevent others from falling for similar schemes.

The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office is aware of these scams and reminds residents that they will never ask for payment over the phone or through unconventional methods.
