Tampa firefighters and community raise funds for Captain Benny Bengter’s recovery

When Tampa Fire Rescue Captain Benny Bengter fell seriously ill while on vacation in Hawaii, the Tampa firefighting family and local community quickly rallied to support him. After a life‑threatening pancreatitis attack that led to shock, organ failure, abdominal compartment syndrome and sepsis, Captain Bengter underwent emergency surgery and spent more than a month in the hospital before returning home.

Fundraiser brings the community together

On Sunday, the Firemen’s Benevolent Association of the City of Tampa organized a “Beers for Benny” fundraiser at Voodoo Brewing in Valrico. The event featured custom “Benny Strong” T‑shirts, local vendors and a raffle with more than $20,000 worth of donated prizes, including a golf cart and jewelry. First responders, their families and neighbors filled the brewery, showing the deep respect and gratitude they hold for one of their own.

Financial help for a family in need

Captain Bengter, a 17‑year veteran who followed his father and uncles into the fire service, is now focused on recovery and returning to duty. His mother, Irina Bengter, said the outpouring of support has meant a great deal to the family, especially as they face the financial burden of ongoing medical care for Benny and his fiancée and daughter.

The Firemen’s Benevolent Association has also set up an official online fundraiser to allow those who could not attend the event to contribute. All proceeds are earmarked for medical expenses, travel costs for follow‑up appointments and other needs that have arisen during Benny’s convalescence.

Why the response matters

First‑responder families often bear hidden costs when a loved one is injured or falls ill. By coming together, Tampa’s fire service and broader community demonstrate the traditional family values and mutual aid that strengthen neighborhoods. The fundraiser not only provides tangible financial relief but also reinforces the moral support that is essential for a swift and full recovery.

How to continue helping

Anyone wishing to contribute can visit the Firemen’s Benevolent Association’s online donation page, linked through the event organizers. Additional donations of goods, services or time are also welcomed by the association, which coordinates ongoing assistance for the Bengter family.

Captain Bengter’s story is a reminder of the sacrifices made daily by Tampa’s firefighters and the power of a community that stands together in times of crisis.
