SpaceX Secures First Starfall Customer: Luxembourg’s Space Cargo

SpaceX’s emerging Starfall service, which returns payloads from orbit to Earth, has landed its first paying customer. Luxembourg‑based Space Cargo signed a deal to fly its “BentoBox” system inside a Starfall capsule on the company’s first commercial Starship mission, slated for 2028.

Starfall and the BentoBox concept

Starfall is a disk‑shaped, aluminum capsule protected by a 10‑foot (3‑meter) heat shield. Designed for short‑duration trips, it allows customers to conduct research or manufacture products in microgravity and then safely bring them back to Earth. Space Cargo plans to load up to one ton of payloads into its BentoBox, a modular container that will be secured inside the capsule.

“We’re flying 200 kilos with our current systems, but with Starship and Starfall, we’re going to go to ton and tons of customer payloads, and that’s really what we want,” said Space Cargo CEO Nicolas Gaume.

Potential markets and competition

The service targets industries that benefit from the unique conditions of space, such as life‑science and biotechnology firms that need ultra‑pure materials, as well as manufacturers of fiber‑optic cables that achieve higher quality in microgravity. Nearly half of Space Cargo’s prospective customers are in these sectors.

Starfall joins a growing field of capsule re‑entry providers. Smaller rivals like California‑based Varda Space already operate multiple missions, landing capsules in remote deserts. The Pentagon has also shown interest in capsule re‑entry technology for hypersonic weapons testing and missile‑defense training.

Starship’s path to commercial flights

SpaceX has not yet announced a firm date for Starship’s first commercial mission, but the company expects a series of test flights this year, including a text flight that will deploy Starlink satellites. The 2028 target suggests that several Starship launches in 2027 will be dedicated to the company’s satellite business before transitioning to commercial payload missions like Starfall.

Gaume emphasized that the partnership promises a rapid cadence of flights, noting that “the volume and the rhythm” are key to the program’s success. While pricing details were not disclosed, the collaboration signals confidence in Starship’s ability to support frequent, high‑capacity re‑entry services.
