Tampa officials gathered on Thursday at the corner of 9th Avenue and 16th Street in historic Ybor City to dedicate a new street sign honoring Officer Morris Lopez. The ceremony was attended by Mayor Jane Castor, Police Chief Brett Owen, City Councilor Luis Viera, and members of Lopez’s family.
Remembering a hero of 1949
Officer Lopez, a 25‑year‑old Navy veteran of World War II, was killed in a drive‑by shooting on August 30, 1949. Witnesses said he pushed a young paperboy out of the line of fire before being struck himself. The gunman was never identified and the case remains unsolved.
Family and community reflections
Lopez’s grandson, Morris Lopez III, spoke at the dedication, saying, “A city can remember. A city can say that a life of service mattered. A city can place a name so that future generations can pass by and ask, ‘who was Officer Morris Lopez?'” The dedication, he added, provides long‑awaited closure for a family that has carried the loss for decades.
Continuing the legacy of service, Lopez’s grandson is now an assistant chief with Hillsborough County Fire Rescue, while the son of the paperboy who was saved also became a firefighter. Police Chief Owen remarked, “While more than 75 years have passed, it does not diminish the sacrifice he made to the community. He answered the call to serve, knowing the risks that came with it. His name is a permanent part of our community.”
City’s commitment to honoring fallen officers
The dedication is part of Tampa’s broader effort to recognize the sacrifices of its public‑safety officers. Since the department’s founding in 1895, 32 Tampa Police Department officers have died in the line of duty. The new sign ensures that Officer Lopez’s bravery will be remembered by residents and visitors alike.
Mayor Castor highlighted the importance of such memorials, noting that they reinforce the bond between law‑enforcement and the neighborhoods they protect. “Honoring our fallen heroes reminds us all of the values that keep Tampa safe and united,” she said.
Looking ahead
The intersection now bears the name “Morris Lopez Way,” a permanent reminder of the officer’s selfless act. City officials hope the dedication will inspire future generations to serve their community with the same courage and dedication.
