Taiwan’s President Lai Ching-te urged his country to work together to protect its democracy and not become part of China. Speaking at the Democratic Progressive Party’s annual convention, Lai warned of China’s ‘legal warfare’ and its new ethnic unity law, which could give Beijing a legal basis to take action against Taiwanese it views as separatists.
China’s Stance on Taiwan
China has long considered Taiwan an inviolable part of its territory and has rejected all criticism of its new law. Lai emphasized that Taiwan is already an independent country, with its constitutional name being the Republic of China, and it is not subordinate to the People’s Republic of China.
Lai also reiterated that Taiwan’s future must be decided jointly by its 23 million people, regardless of ethnic group or background. He called on his party members to stand united and oppose the ‘red terror’ posed by China to Taiwanese society.
