Sioux Falls, S.D. – Throughout November, the Sweet Susie drink at Sippin 605 Nutrition will serve as the focal point of a community fundraiser benefiting Camp Gilbert, a volunteer‑led, one‑week summer camp for children ages 8‑18 living with Type 1 diabetes.
The Sweet Susie was created in memory of the shop owner’s mother, who passed away from diabetes when the owner was young. By naming the drink after her, the owners hope to honor her legacy while giving back to families facing the same health challenges.
Camp Gilbert’s Mission
“Camp Gilbert provides kids with Type 1 diabetes a chance to be kids again, without having to constantly explain their condition,” said Sami Zoss, a board member for the camp. The week‑long program, held at Lake Poinsett, offers a supportive community where campers can form friendships and enjoy typical camp activities without the daily worries of disease management.
Former camper and current counselor Jenna McCabe added, “It doesn’t matter if you had ten friends or one friend; you’re going to have a hundred friends now.” The sense of belonging, she says, can have lasting effects for both the children and their families.
Local Business Leads the Effort
Madi Krantz, manager of Sippin 605 Nutrition, explained the broader impact: “It means showing these families that they’re supported, seen, and heard, no matter what struggles they’re going through.” Krantz emphasized that the fundraiser is about more than raising money; it’s about affirming the worth of each child.
The Sweet Susie fundraiser runs the entire month of November, giving residents multiple opportunities to purchase the drink and contribute to the camp’s budget. Organizers hope the campaign will both honor those affected by diabetes and create lasting memories for the next generation of campers.
Expansion to a New Location
Sippin 605 Nutrition is expanding its footprint with a new location, Dakota Sips Nutrition, set to open on Monday, Nov. 9, inside the nonprofit community center Gather Tea. The new shop will also serve the Sweet Susie drink, extending the fundraiser’s reach.
Community members are encouraged to visit either location, enjoy the Sweet Susie, and support a cause that aligns with family values, faith‑based compassion, and the principle of individual liberty to help those in need.
