Survey Finds Workers Prefer AI Chatbots Over Employer Mental‑Health Programs

According to the 2026 Workplace Well‑being Report from Founder Reports, a majority of American workers are choosing artificial‑intelligence chatbots to discuss job stress rather than the mental‑health resources provided by their employers. The survey of 2,000 U.S. adults revealed that 42.6% have already used an AI chatbot to talk about work‑related anxiety, and another 19.7% are considering it.

Confidence in Employer Support Declines

Human‑resources professionals still recognize a duty to address mental health, with 87% agreeing organizations should support employee well‑being. Yet only 62% feel prepared to meet those needs, down from 70% in 2024. The gap between corporate intent and employee trust appears to be widening.

Employees Feel Safer With AI

When asked who they could be completely honest with about work stress, respondents selected AI chatbots (20.9%) more often than managers (17.2%), HR representatives (4.5%) or company leadership (3.5%). Behavioral scientist Gleb Tsipursky explained that AI feels psychologically safer because it removes the social risk of admitting struggle to a human supervisor.

Low Utilization of Employer Benefits

Only 10.7% of workers have used the mental‑health benefits offered by their employers. A 2025 National Alliance on Mental Illness survey found that just 53% of employees know how to access those benefits. Amy Mosset of Interactive Counselling noted that the administrative effort and fear of being noticed deter many from using confidential services.

Privacy Risks With AI

Experts warn that AI conversations are not as private as they seem. Viktor Bulanek, founder of Penetrify, said corporate data‑governance policies can allow administrators to retrieve chatbot logs for litigation or HR investigations. He also cautioned against using consumer chatbots on work devices, which are often monitored by data‑loss‑prevention systems.

What This Means for Employers

When workers avoid formal channels, underlying issues remain hidden, potentially affecting entire teams. While AI can help employees frame concerns, it cannot change workloads, resolve conflicts, or influence company policy. Tsipursky predicts AI will continue to be a low‑friction outlet, but hopes it will serve as a bridge to more substantive human conversations.

Key Takeaways

  • 42.6% of surveyed workers have used AI chatbots for work stress.
  • Only 10.7% have accessed employer‑provided mental‑health benefits.
  • Privacy and perceived stigma are major barriers to using company resources.
  • Employers risk missing critical well‑being signals if employees rely solely on AI.
