West African Drum Circle Brings Music and Unity to Cleveland Metroparks

Every summer, the Cleveland Metroparks host a vibrant West African Drum Circle that draws between 30 and 50 participants of all ages and skill levels. The event, held at Edgewater Beach, offers a chance for residents from across Cleveland and its suburbs to experience the rhythm, culture, and fellowship of West African music.

Leadership and Cultural Roots

The drum circle is led by Olubala Mons, a musician and professor of Africana Studies at Kent State University. Mons guides participants through traditional West African rhythms, teaching them the meanings of key words such as “Funga” (welcome), “Alafia” (hello), and “Ashe” (so be it). He emphasizes that anyone can join, regardless of musical background, and that the shared experience creates a spiritual and communal energy.

Community Participation

Regular attendee Mark Frazier of Cleveland describes the circle as a “community thing” that brings people together for fun and connection. Newcomers like Martha Brennan and her friend Joanne, who happened upon the circle after a swim, quickly joined in, picking up drums and learning the beats. Participants report leaving the event feeling happier, more fulfilled, and proud of having contributed to a collective sound.

Family Friendly Atmosphere

Children are especially drawn to the lively music and dancing, adding to the inclusive atmosphere. Observers note that the drum circle provides a safe, family‑friendly environment where kids can explore rhythm and movement while adults enjoy the communal spirit.

Upcoming Sessions

Following the Edgewater Beach gathering, the drum circle will continue at two additional Metroparks locations: Euclid Beach Park on Friday, August 28, and Garfield Park Nature Preschool on Friday, September 4, both beginning at 6:30 p.m. These sessions invite more Cleveland residents to experience the unifying power of music.

Why It Matters

The West African Drum Circle exemplifies how public parks can serve as cultural hubs, strengthening neighborhood ties and celebrating diversity. By offering free, open‑air programming, the Cleveland Metroparks reinforce the value of community, family, and shared heritage—principles that align with the city’s commitment to fostering a vibrant, inclusive public life.

How to Join

Anyone interested in participating can simply arrive at the designated park location during the scheduled time. No prior experience is required; drums and other percussion instruments are provided on site. For more information, visitors can check the Cleveland Metroparks website or follow local event listings.
