Nearly five years after the Champlain Towers South disaster in Surfside, federal investigators have released their technical findings on the cause of the collapse that killed 98 people.
Investigation Findings
According to the National Institute of Standards and Technology’s National Construction Safety Team, the collapse began in early June 2021, when two connections between garage columns and the pool deck failed. The lead investigators explained that the building’s original design and construction had narrow margins against failure, which ultimately led to the larger collapse on June 24, 2021.
