Sunshine Class at Kentucky State Fair Gives 150 Participants with Disabilities a Chance to Shine in Livestock Show

The Kentucky State Fair continues its tradition of inclusive programming with the fourth‑annual Sunshine Class, a special track that allows participants with disabilities to step into the livestock show ring. Roughly 150 individuals took part this year, each paired with a mentor who taught the fundamentals of showmanship, from handling animals to presenting themselves confidently.

Mentorship and Skill‑Building

Mentors work side‑by‑side with participants, guiding them through the nuances of livestock handling and the etiquette of the fair’s competitive arena. “They just get to be themselves and not worry about, ‘How do I say this, and how do I do this?’” said Lonna Bussell, executive director of Lighthouse Farm, the organization that runs the program. The hands‑on experience helps participants form genuine connections with the animals and with each other.

Personal Impact

Thaddeus White, a longtime participant, explained how the program fills a gap that often appears after youth programs end. “I would say it’s a good event for those with special needs because once they age out of the program, they’re not typically able to participate,” White said. “However, this gives them a chance to participate and gives them a sense of showmanship.” He added that the confidence he gained has helped him push forward in other areas of his life.

Showcase at Broadbent Arena

After weeks of training, participants demonstrate their new skills in a public showcase at the Fair’s Broadbent Arena. A mentor observed, “It gives everyone equal opportunities and shows that anyone can do it,” highlighting the program’s core mission of inclusion and empowerment.

Growth and Future Plans

Since its inception, the Sunshine Class has expanded significantly, reflecting both community support and a growing recognition of the importance of accessible programming at large public events. Organizers hope to continue expanding the class, adding more mentors and increasing the number of participants in future fairs.

Community Support

The program is supported by local volunteers, businesses, and the broader fair community, underscoring Kentucky’s commitment to providing opportunities for all citizens, regardless of ability. By fostering confidence, skill development, and a sense of belonging, the Sunshine Class exemplifies the fair’s role as a gathering place that celebrates the diverse talents of Kentuckians.
