Sunsets, Sculptures, and Open Sky: An Afternoon at Shoaff Park

There is a moment at Shoaff Park, usually somewhere around late afternoon, when the light goes gold over Shoaff Lake and the whole north side of Fort Wayne feels like it belongs to you alone. The joggers have settled into their rhythm, a family is launching a kayak near the boat ramp, and somewhere across the water a pair of great blue herons are doing absolutely nothing in the most elegant way possible. If you have never spent a proper afternoon at Shoaff Park, you are genuinely missing one of this city’s finest pleasures.

Nestled along the St. Joseph River on Fort Wayne’s north side, Shoaff Park spans more than 200 acres and manages to feel both expansive and intimate at the same time. The park is named after a beloved local family and has been a gathering place for Fort Wayne residents for decades, but it never feels tired or worn out the way some city parks can. There is a care here — in the maintained trails, the clean picnic shelters, the tended playground — that tells you the city and its residents actually love this place.

The centerpiece is undeniably the lake. It sits calm and wide in the middle of the park, ringed by a paved path that is perfect for a leisurely walk or a more ambitious run. You can rent pedal boats in the warmer months, and fishing is popular along the banks — bass and bluegill are reliable companions if you bring a rod. The boat launch accommodates small watercraft, so kayakers and canoeists show up regularly to paddle in the peaceful water before connecting to the St. Joseph River beyond.

Beyond the lake, the park opens into large open meadows ideal for frisbee, pickup soccer, or simply laying out a blanket and reading for two hours without guilt. There are multiple well-maintained shelters available for reservation if you want to host a birthday party, a family reunion, or a summer cookout with a view. The playground areas are solid and well-loved by the neighborhood families who make Shoaff a weekly ritual rather than an occasional destination.

One of the things that quietly sets Shoaff apart is the trail network that winds through wooded sections along the river corridor. These shaded paths offer a very different experience from the lakeshore loop — cooler, quieter, occasionally surprising you with a glimpse of deer or a fox cutting through the underbrush. In autumn, this corridor turns spectacular, with canopy color that rivals anything you would drive an hour out of town to find.

Winter does not close Shoaff down, either. When conditions are right, the park becomes a sledding destination, and the frozen lake has historically drawn ice skaters, though always check conditions before venturing out. There is a perseverance to this park — it shows up for Fort Wayne in every season.

Shoaff Park is located at 2727 Lake Avenue on the city’s north side. Admission is free. Parking is plentiful. The shelters and boat rentals have seasonal hours, so it is worth a quick call to Fort Wayne Parks and Recreation before planning a large outing. But for a spontaneous Sunday afternoon with nowhere particular to be? Just show up. The herons will be waiting.
