Sumter County is starting the new school year with a brand new elementary school building. The Sumter County Central Elementary School, located on Pine Grove Road on the campus of Sumter Central High School, was officially opened with a ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by Alabama State Schools Superintendent Dr. Eric G. Mackey and local officials.
The new school is part of a unified campus project that began in September 2024 under state intervention to replace older, outdated facilities. It will house pre-K through 4th grade and is seen as an opportunity to advance the education of youth in a modern facility.
A New Era for Sumter County Schools
Superintendent Mackey expressed his support for the new facility, stating that the towns of York and Livingston and all of Sumter County have worked together to provide a state-of-the-art learning facility for their young people. Sumter County Schools Superintendent Marcy Burroughs also expressed excitement over the new facility, calling it a long-overdue opportunity.
The school system is offering special attendance incentives to encourage everyone to start the school year strong on day one.
