Summit Country Day opens nature‑inspired playground to boost whole‑child development

Summit Country Day in Cincinnati has opened a brand‑new nature‑inspired playground, giving students a dedicated space to learn, play and grow outside the classroom. The school’s original playground, built more than two decades ago, was completely re‑imagined to serve the expanded range of age groups now enrolled.

Wellness and whole‑child focus

“We thought about wellness, we thought about the whole child development and we thought a lot about nature and nature inspiration. We know what the research says about the importance of being outdoors,” said Kelly Schiess, head of school. The design team and school leaders emphasized that the outdoor environment is intended to foster play, discovery, imagination and creativity while reinforcing academic concepts.

Learning through play

Mike Johnson, lower school director, explained how the playground’s features are built to teach resilience. “Many of the elements, like the treehouse back there, have some easier and harder ways to navigate, which obviously end up having kids sometimes getting frustrated or sometimes falling or having to try and try again, which that resiliency is something that we really are working intentionally to build in our students,” he said.

Beyond physical challenges, the playground integrates science, problem‑solving and imaginative play. “We knew that we wanted a piece that would also integrate into sciences, and also we wanted spaces that would integrate into problem solving, navigation, imagination, and creativity. So those components were really inspiration for this playground,” Schiess added.

Features and future plans

The hillside area has quickly become a favorite spot for younger children to tumble and explore, while other zones encourage imaginative exploration and collaborative projects. The school plans to expand the site over time, adding birdhouses, raised garden beds and even musical instruments behind the middle‑school building.

These additions aim to deepen the connection between outdoor play and classroom learning, giving students hands‑on experiences with nature, ecology and the arts. By incorporating gardens and music, the school hopes to further support STEM education and creative expression.

Community response

Parents and teachers have praised the new playground as a tangible investment in the well‑being of the children. Many see it as a model for how private schools can blend recreation with curriculum, reinforcing the importance of whole‑child development in a faith‑based educational setting.

Summit Country Day’s leadership says the project reflects the school’s commitment to nurturing each student’s mind, body and spirit, aligning with its mission to provide a holistic education rooted in Christian values.
