Study Links TV Watching to Brain Changes

A new study suggests that spending hours every day in front of the television isn’t doing your brain any favors. Researchers found that people who reported watching television more often in midlife had smaller brain volumes decades later in areas involved in language and thinking.

Key Findings

The study, which analyzed data from over 1,700 participants, found that people who watched TV “very often” had smaller volumes in several brain regions, including those involved in cognitive control and language. These viewers also had more white matter hyperintensities, which are changes seen on MRI that reflect injury to the brain’s small blood vessels and have been linked to cognitive decline and dementia.

According to Dr. Leana Wen, an emergency physician and clinical associate professor at George Washington University, the study’s findings suggest that not all sedentary activities are the same. Watching television is a cognitively passive activity, whereas sitting at work often involves more mentally demanding tasks.

Implications

The study’s findings have important implications for our daily habits. While it’s not necessary to completely eliminate TV watching, it’s essential to be mindful of how much time we spend on passive screen-based activities. Dr. Wen suggests that people should consider what they’re replacing with TV time, such as exercise, in-person social interactions, or mentally stimulating activities.

In addition to reducing passive screen time, there are evidence-based ways to protect brain health as we age. Regular physical activity, controlling blood pressure, and maintaining a healthy weight are all crucial. A Mediterranean-style eating pattern rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and healthy fats has also been associated with better brain health.
