Refinancing is a common strategy for managing student loan debt, but the decision to refinance isn’t always straightforward. A recent survey of 750 borrowers found that many consider refinancing, but don’t move forward with it due to confusion and lack of confidence in understanding the process.
Understanding Student Loan Refinancing
Student loan refinancing is a way to manage repayment and potentially save money on loans. However, it’s not always a straightforward decision. Borrowers must consider the trade-offs and opportunities of refinancing, including the potential to reduce their interest rate or pay off their loans faster.
The survey found that many borrowers are overwhelmed by the refinancing process, with 40% of borrowers holding both federal and private student loans, which can have different structures and repayment options. Federal student loans have fixed interest rates and are eligible for various borrower protections, including income-driven repayment and forgiveness programs. Private student loans, on the other hand, may have fixed or variable rates and don’t qualify for income-driven repayment or forgiveness.
Barriers to Refinancing
The survey also found that many borrowers are hesitant to refinance due to concerns about losing access to federal benefits, such as income-driven repayment and forgiveness programs. Additionally, some borrowers are unsure about the refinancing process and may not understand the costs and savings associated with it.
Despite these barriers, many borrowers are interested in refinancing their student loans. In fact, 87% of borrowers said they would be somewhat or very likely to refinance if they knew it would save them money over the life of the loan.
