The resolution says, “Town Manager Thomas Calter has demonstrated a consistent and documented pattern of disrespect toward the members of this Union, including dismissing legitimate safety concerns, and reacting with anger when the concerns were raised.”

Dispute and Investigation

The union also said that Calter criticized the union after a firefighter’s injury sparked a safety grievance, treated the union’s officers with disrespect, and more. Calter and Police Chief Donna McNamara were both placed on leave last month as the Stoughton Select Board brought in an outside investigator to look into what happened.

Recent select board meetings have seen demonstrations in favor of McNamara, and more were expected at Tuesday night’s meeting. The board has not commented on the situation, which McNamara has filed a complaint about in civil court.

Support from Other Unions

Her lawyer shared in a court filing Tuesday documents from a second union, representing employees of the Stoughton Public Works Department, indicating they also passed a vote of no confidence against Calter.
