Renowned vocal coach Stevie Mackey, known for his work on The Voice and with stars such as Jennifer Lopez, Selena Gomez, Lenny Kravitz, Kelly Rowland and Coldplay, is bringing his celebrated “Taco Tuesday Live” tour to Washington, D.C. on Friday, Sept. 25.
From a home‑grown recital to a national tour
Mackey says the concept began in his own living room as a casual alternative to formal recitals. “When I started vocal coaching, I would do more pop and soul coaching. I didn’t want a formal recital, so I created a casual one, and Taco Tuesday was born,” he told WTOP. The gatherings quickly grew beyond his kitchen, featuring plant‑based tacos cooked in an electric skillet and a supportive atmosphere where both seasoned performers and newcomers could share the stage.
What to expect in D.C.
The D.C. stop will follow the same community‑first format that has made the tour a hit in twelve cities, including Boston, New York, Philadelphia, Columbus, Detroit, Chicago, Nashville, Atlanta, Dallas, Houston, San Francisco and Los Angeles. Audience participation is encouraged, and Mackey is specifically looking for local talent to lead the choir parts.
“I go to cities where I can trust that y’all are gonna join in and sing the choir parts,” he said. “It’s not for me to shine. I’m just learning about your city and bringing out the great singers that live there.”
How to get involved
Anyone interested in performing can submit a video through the city‑specific submission form on the Taco Tuesday Live website. Mackey’s team, along with musician friends and the “Taco Tuesday committee,” will review the entries and share the selection process on video.
For those who prefer to watch and sing along, tickets are available online. The event promises a night of live music, community bonding and, of course, tasty tacos.
Why the event matters locally
Beyond entertainment, the tour underscores the importance of local arts and mentorship. By inviting D.C. singers to share the stage, Mackey provides a platform for emerging talent to gain confidence and experience, echoing his belief that “the inexperienced see that the experienced singers they look up to get just as scared and just as nervous to sing in front of others.”
Local musicians and community members are encouraged to attend, support one another, and enjoy a family‑friendly evening that celebrates both music and fellowship.
