Stephen A. Smith warns Hasan Piker could hurt Democrats in Michigan Senate race

During a recent interview on The Conversation with Dasha Burns, ESPN personality Stephen A. Smith warned that far‑left streamer Hasan Piker could become a general‑election liability for the Democratic Party. Smith said Piker’s expanding political footprint may “contaminate the electorate on the left side of the aisle” and eventually “come back to haunt” Democrats.

RNC attacks the Democrat who embraced Piker

The Republican National Committee has already seized on the controversy. National press secretary Natalie Baldassarre told Fox News Digital that Michigan Democratic Senate nominee Abdul El‑Sayed’s refusal to distance himself from Piker shows a “true allegiance” to terrorist groups, calling El‑Sayed “a terrorist sympathizer and an America‑hating socialist.” Baldassarre added that Democrats’ failure to disavow the streamer either reflects shared “poisonous ideology” or cowardice.

El‑Sayed’s strategy: courting the streamer’s audience

El‑Sayed defended his relationship with Piker, telling Smith that the three‑million people who follow the streamer need a “pathway into an electoral movement” rather than being pushed out of the system. He argued that the campaign seeks to win over those viewers while disavowing the ideas he disagrees with.

Smith summarized the approach, noting that El‑Sayed is not endorsing Piker personally but is focused on the voters who listen to him. “So, you’re not thinking about him. You’re thinking about the three million people that support him, and you’re trying to get those votes,” Smith said.

Polling shows a tight race

A recent Fox News poll of Michigan registered voters found Republican nominee Mike Rogers leading El‑Sayed 51% to 47%, a margin within the poll’s sampling error. While 98% of self‑described Democratic Socialists of America supporters backed El‑Sayed, his support fell to 69% among non‑DSA Democrats and independents.

Controversies surrounding Piker

Hasan Piker has a history of inflammatory remarks, including a 2019 comment that “America deserved 9/11,” which he later retracted, and more recent statements about Israel and American Jews that sparked backlash. Despite the controversy, Piker has continued to endorse El‑Sayed, appearing at multiple campaign events, including the primary‑night gathering.

Fox News Digital reached out to Piker, the Democratic National Committee and the RNC for comment but did not receive an immediate response.

What this means for Michigan voters

The Michigan Senate race has become a flashpoint for the broader cultural battle between progressive media personalities and traditional party structures. As the primary season progresses, both parties will need to decide whether to embrace or reject the influence of online figures like Piker. For voters, the key question remains whether a candidate’s association with a controversial streamer will outweigh policy positions and experience on Election Day.
