Step Into the Water: Fly Fishing the Illinois River at Mulberry

There is a particular kind of quiet that settles over you the moment your waders meet the current of the Illinois River. It is not silence exactly — the water is always talking, pushing around smooth limestone shelves, rushing past cedar-lined banks, carrying the smell of cool earth downstream. It is the kind of quiet that makes the rest of the world feel very far away, and it is one of the finest things you can experience within a short drive of downtown Springdale.

The Illinois River stretches for miles through the Ozark highlands of northwest Arkansas, and the Springdale access points along its upper reaches put some of the best wade-fishing water in the region right at your feet. Anglers who know this stretch will tell you — sometimes reluctantly — that the Illinois River is among the most underappreciated fisheries in the entire state. The river runs clear and cold off Tenkiller Lake upstream, keeping water temperatures hospitable for smallmouth bass, largemouth bass, spotted bass, and a robust population of channel catfish and sunfish that will test even the most seasoned light-tackle fisherman.

What makes this stretch particularly appealing is the variety of terrain. You will find deep, emerald pools tucked against shaded bluffs where big smallmouth hold in the current seam waiting for an easy meal. Around the next bend there are shallow riffles that practically beg for a surface popper on a warm summer morning. If you are a fly angler, bring your five or six-weight and a box of poppers, soft-hackle nymphs, and crawdad patterns. If you prefer spinning tackle, small Ned rigs and finesse swimbaits work exceptionally well along the gravel bars.

The river is also genuinely beautiful in a way that photographs cannot fully capture. In spring, redbud and dogwood paint the hillsides pink and white above the waterline. By midsummer, sycamore trees spread enormous canopies along the bank and the water takes on an almost tropical clarity. In autumn, the whole valley turns amber and copper, and the smallmouth fishing typically hits its peak as the fish feed aggressively before winter.

Beyond fishing, the Illinois River is ideal for a relaxed float trip on an inner tube or inflatable kayak. Families gather at gravel bars for picnics, children splash in the shallows, and canoe rentals are available nearby for those who want to cover more water. The river is genuinely family-friendly at moderate water levels, making it a perfect warm-weather outing when you want something that feels a little more adventurous than a park picnic.

Access is straightforward. Several public river access points sit within twenty to thirty minutes of central Springdale via Highway 412 West toward Tenkiller. Parking areas are maintained, and the riverbank is open to the public along much of its course. A valid Arkansas fishing license is required and can be purchased online through the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission website before you arrive.

Pack a cooler, bring sunscreen, leave the schedule behind for a few hours, and let the Illinois River remind you what northwest Arkansas is really made of — clean water, open sky, and a pace of life that never needed to be rushed in the first place.
