Step Into the Light: Why the Minneapolis Institute of Art Will Steal Your Whole Afternoon

There are museums you visit, and then there are museums that visit you — the kind that linger in your memory long after you’ve walked back out into the afternoon sun. The Minneapolis Institute of Art, known simply as Mia, is firmly in that second category. Tucked into the leafy Whittier neighborhood just south of downtown, this place is one of the great underrated art museums in the entire country, and I will happily argue that point with anyone.

From the outside, Mia cuts an impressive figure. The original 1915 Beaux-Arts building, designed by McKim, Mead & White, anchors the complex with its grand colonnaded facade, while a series of thoughtful modern additions have expanded the footprint without ever losing the soul of the place. Walking up those broad front steps feels genuinely ceremonial — like the building itself is preparing you for something worth your time.

And once you’re inside, it absolutely delivers. Mia’s permanent collection spans more than 90,000 works covering 5,000 years of human creativity. That sounds like a statistic until you’re standing in front of Rembrandt’s luminous Lucretia, or turning a corner to discover an entire gallery of Japanese armor that looks like it was made for warriors from another dimension. The range here is staggering: ancient Egyptian artifacts, Ming dynasty furniture, a world-class collection of African art, European masterworks, American modernism, and contemporary pieces that will make you stop mid-step and think.

One of the things I love most about Mia is its accessibility. General admission to the permanent collection is completely free — every single day. This is not a small thing. It means you can drift in on a Thursday afternoon with no agenda whatsoever, spend forty-five minutes with the Impressionists, and leave feeling like you’ve done something genuinely meaningful with your day. Families come through on weekends, solo visitors sit for long stretches in front of single paintings, and everyone seems to find their own pace without feeling rushed or crowded.

Special exhibitions rotate throughout the year and do require a ticket, but they tend to be well-curated and worth the modest cost. Check the website before your visit — Mia has a talent for landing shows that feel both scholarly and deeply engaging to a general audience.

The museum also has a lovely courtyard café and a well-stocked shop if you need a break or want to take something home. But honestly, the art is the thing. Plan to give yourself at least two to three hours, wear comfortable shoes, and don’t try to see everything at once. Mia rewards wandering. It rewards returning. And it will absolutely reward you for making the trip to Minneapolis in the first place.

Mia is located at 2400 Third Avenue South in the Whittier neighborhood, with free parking available on site and easy access via Metro Transit. Hours vary by day, so a quick check at artsmia.org before you go is always a good idea. Just go. You’ll thank yourself later.
