Step Inside the Biggest Little Science Museum You’ve Never Heard Of

There’s a building on the north end of downtown Reno, right along the Truckee River corridor, that stops people in their tracks the moment they walk through the door. It’s not a casino. It’s not a hotel. It’s the Terry Lee Wells Nevada Discovery Museum — locals just call it The Discovery — and it is, without question, one of the most genuinely engaging places in this entire city.

The Discovery opened in 2011 and occupies a sleek, modern 67,000-square-foot facility at 490 South Center Street. From the outside it has that confident architectural posture of a place that knows it’s doing something important. On the inside, it delivers on every bit of that promise. Spread across multiple floors are dozens of hands-on exhibits designed around science, technology, engineering, art, and math — but framed in a way that makes adults forget they’re learning just as quickly as the kids do.

On my last visit, I spent a solid twenty minutes experimenting with the water table exhibit, watching how channels and currents shift when you redirect the flow. There’s something deeply satisfying about playing with water and calling it science. Nearby, a full maker space gives visitors access to tools and materials for building and tinkering — a genuinely rare offering for a regional museum of this size. The climbing structure that towers through the center of the building is a draw on its own, and the rotating special exhibitions mean there’s almost always something new to anchor a return trip.

What sets The Discovery apart from comparable museums in much larger cities is how thoughtfully it scales. The exhibits don’t talk down to older visitors. The design respects curiosity at every age level. You’ll see grandparents genuinely absorbed in the same stations as their seven-year-olds, and that’s not an accident — it reflects real care in the curation.

The museum is also deeply woven into the Reno community. School groups cycle through regularly, and the staff clearly takes pride in making science feel accessible to kids who might not see themselves as science people yet. That mission is palpable the moment you walk in. It doesn’t feel like a check-the-box attraction. It feels alive.

Admission is reasonable — typically around $14 for adults and $12 for children — and parking along Center Street or in nearby downtown structures is manageable outside of major event weekends. Plan to spend at least two hours. You’ll want them.

If you’ve been to Reno and somehow missed The Discovery, consider this your nudge to go back. And if it’s your first visit to the city, put this on your itinerary before you touch a slot machine. You’ll thank yourself.
