With temperatures soaring to 100 degrees, Texas Tech Health El Paso is reminding residents to stay hydrated. Dr. Edward Michelson, department chair of TTH Emergency Medicine, emphasizes the importance of replacing fluids regularly, especially for those spending time outdoors.
Signs of Dehydration
Early signs of dehydration include thirst and fatigue. If left untreated, it can lead to acute heat sickness, such as heat stroke or heat exhaustion. Michelson recommends carrying a water bottle and sipping on it throughout the day, rather than waiting until feeling thirsty.
It’s also essential to avoid drinks that can exacerbate dehydration, such as coffee, sugary drinks, and alcohol. Instead, opt for water or flavored water. Michelson suggests drinking one to three quarts of water per day to stay hydrated.
