State Fair Season Returns: Four Major Fairs Open Across the Nation

Travelers in the Midwest, Northeast, Pacific Northwest and South can begin planning their fair‑hopping itineraries now. The 2026 fair calendar spans just over seven and a half weeks, with each event offering a blend of agricultural heritage, new culinary choices and family‑friendly programming.

New York – The Nation’s First State Fair

Starting August 26, Syracuse will host the Great New York State Fair, the nation’s first state fair, which began in 1841. The 13‑day fair commemorates its 185th anniversary and retains historic elements such as animal exhibits and a plowing contest while adding modern amenities like a Calming Sensory Room, an Outdoor Activity Sensory Area and designated Sensory Friendly Hours on September 2.

Minnesota – The Great Minnesota Get‑Together

One day later, Falcon Heights welcomes the Minnesota State Fair, a tradition dating to 1859. The fairgrounds cover 322 acres and feature landmarks such as the Grandstand and Fine Arts Center. This year the fair introduced 36 new food items and nine new vendors, adding to an already extensive menu of nearly 1,600 items across roughly 300 concession stands.

Washington – Pacific Northwest’s Largest Fair

By early September the Washington State Fair opens in Puyallup on September 4 and runs through September 27, closing on Tuesdays and on September 9. Founded in 1900, the fair describes itself as one of the world’s biggest and the largest in the Pacific Northwest. Highlights include the beloved Fisher Scones, the Puyallup Rodeo (September 10‑13) and the Dancin’ in the Dirt concert series tied to the rodeo evenings.

Texas – 140‑Year Celebration

The State Fair of Texas begins September 25 in Dallas and runs for 24 days, ending October 18. Marking the 140th anniversary of its 1886 founding, the fair aligns its celebration with the nation’s 250th birthday. Commemorative art titled “Stars, Stripes, and Howdies” features Big Tex, the 55‑foot mascot, in patriotic red, white and blue.

Planning Your Fair Tour

Because the fairs overlap, travelers must decide which dates work best. New York and Minnesota overlap for all but one day of the New York run. Washington opens during the overlap of the New York and Minnesota fairs, while Texas starts after Washington closes. The staggered schedule offers flexibility for families and enthusiasts who wish to experience multiple fairs.

Each fair continues to evolve, adding new attractions and food options while preserving the agricultural and community traditions that have defined them for over a century. Whether you’re a longtime fairgoer or a first‑time visitor, the 2026 season promises a mix of nostalgia and fresh experiences across four distinct regions of the United States.
