Greater Rockwall Youth Symphony celebrates Classical Music Month with over 300 student musicians

Rockwall County, Texas – August 25, 2026 – As the county observes September as Classical Music Month, the Greater Rockwall Youth Symphony (GRYS) is using the occasion to showcase the impact of its orchestral program on local youth. Since its founding in 2022, GRYS has welcomed more than 300 young musicians, offering them a structured environment to develop musical skill and personal character beyond the regular school day.

Building musicians and citizens

GRYS partners closely with Rockwall Independent School District and local music educators, leveraging the county’s long‑standing commitment to educational excellence. Participants receive high‑quality instruction on a range of instruments, rehearsals that emphasize teamwork, and performance opportunities that culminate in public concerts.

Program director Amanda Casper, MM, MSW, BA, BM, emphasizes that the benefits extend far beyond the concert hall. “Whether our students become professional musicians, doctors, engineers, teachers, attorneys, entrepreneurs, or community leaders, the discipline, confidence, creativity, and teamwork they develop through music will follow them,” she said.

Alumni testimony

Former participant Jordan Martinez, now a college sophomore, reflected on his experience: “I not only acquired the skill set necessary to have a professional career in music, I also learned the skills needed to navigate through adult life.” His comments echo a broader pattern reported by GRYS staff: alumni frequently cite improved study habits, stronger public‑speaking ability, and a deeper sense of responsibility.

Community recognition

In 2025, the symphony was named a Rockwall Herald‑Banner Best of the Best, a distinction that underscores community support for the program. Local families, businesses and civic groups contribute time and resources, reinforcing the idea that the symphony is a shared community asset.

GRYS also collaborates with other cultural organizations for joint concerts and outreach events, further integrating music into the fabric of Rockwall County life. These partnerships help expose younger children to classical repertoire and encourage parental involvement in the arts.

Looking ahead

Looking forward, GRYS plans to expand its repertoire, increase scholarship opportunities for low‑income families, and add a mentorship component that pairs seasoned student musicians with newcomers. The organization hopes that by continuing to provide a nurturing environment, it will help shape the next generation of leaders who value both artistic excellence and civic responsibility.

“Our greatest measure of success isn’t only how well our students play; it’s how far they go in life,” Casper added. “When we see former members thriving in diverse careers, we know the symphony is doing its part for the community.”
