Springfield schools and police launch pedestrian safety push for new year

As the first day of classes approaches on Tuesday, Aug. 25, Springfield Public Schools (SPS) is joining forces with the Springfield Police Department (SPD) and the Greene County Sheriff’s Office to reinforce driver safety around school buses and pedestrian walkways. The collaborative effort targets the surge of buses, students and parents on the roads during the back‑to‑school period.

Enforcement focus for August and September

Officers from SPD’s traffic unit will increase patrols in school zones throughout August and September. Their primary objectives are to watch for stop‑arm violations—when a bus driver extends the stop arm and flashes lights, drivers must not pass the vehicle—and to curb speeding in designated school areas. The heightened presence aims to remind motorists that the safety of children is a shared responsibility.

Public‑service campaign

In addition to on‑the‑ground enforcement, the three agencies have produced a series of public‑service announcements. The messages will circulate on social media platforms and other local channels, emphasizing the legal requirement that drivers stop for a school bus with its stop arm extended and lights flashing. The campaign also highlights the broader duty of all road users—parents, students and commuters—to stay alert and respect school‑zone rules.

Comments from district leadership

“This is a shared responsibility,” said Jim Farrell, SPS chief of school police, in a press release. “Whether you’re a parent, a student, or a driver passing through a school zone, your choices make a difference in keeping children safe.” Farrell’s remarks underscore the district’s commitment to fostering a safe environment for its 30,000‑plus students.

Transportation expansion continues

SPS is in the second year of a three‑year expansion of its transportation services. The plan seeks to increase bus access for middle‑school and magnet‑program students, including those enrolled in SPS Choice programs such as the Academy of Exploration, Wolf, and AgAcademy. To improve route efficiency, SPS has contracted with EverDriven, a transportation‑management firm, to serve remote and rural areas more effectively.

The district now operates 104 buses, organized into three tiers of arrival and departure times:

  • Tier 1: 7:20 a.m. – 2:20 p.m.
  • Tier 2: 8:10 a.m. – 3:10 p.m.
  • Tier 3: 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.

These staggered schedules aim to reduce congestion around schools and provide families with more flexible options.

Looking ahead

The safety initiative will continue into the fall semester, with periodic reminders and enforcement checks. Parents are encouraged to discuss safe‑walking practices with their children and to model responsible driving habits. By combining law‑enforcement vigilance, public education and expanded transportation services, Springfield hopes to set a strong safety precedent for the upcoming school year.
