Springfield, Mo. – As poll workers gathered for training ahead of next week’s election, Greene County Clerk Shan Shoeller took a moment to honor a longtime public servant whose dedication embodies the spirit of civic duty.
Marjorie Shelton, a former election judge from St. Louis, was recognized for more than seven decades of service to Missouri’s electoral process. Shelton, now a volunteer poll worker, said she returns to the polls because she believes in serving the community and safeguarding the freedom to vote.
“You do it for service to the community and to mostly remember the freedom that we have to vote. It’s a privilege to have a part in it,” Shelton told the assembled volunteers.
Training and preparation for Election Day
The training session covered standard procedures, voter‑identification requirements, and best practices for assisting voters with accessibility needs. County officials emphasized the importance of a smooth, respectful voting experience for all residents.
Absentee voting in Greene County will conclude on Monday, Nov. 2. On Election Day, Tuesday, Nov. 3, polling places will be open from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m., giving voters ample opportunity to cast their ballots.
Why volunteer service matters
Volunteer poll workers are the backbone of the election system, handling everything from checking in voters to ensuring ballot integrity. Their presence helps maintain confidence in the democratic process, especially in a time when many citizens value the constitutional right to vote.
“Our volunteers are the unsung heroes who keep our elections running fairly and efficiently,” Clerk Shoeller said. “Recognizing individuals like Marjorie reminds us all why we do this work.”
Community impact
Springfield residents can expect a well‑staffed, orderly voting environment thanks to the dedication of volunteers like Shelton. The county encourages anyone interested in serving to sign up for future elections, noting that the experience offers a unique way to give back to the community.
