The Spokane County Sheriff’s Office (SCSO) successfully apprehended a 19-year-old man, Paul Komarov, for alleged reckless driving and attempting to elude police on a Saturday night. The incident highlights the effective use of technology in local law enforcement efforts.
High-Speed Pursuit on I-90
At approximately 10:10 p.m., a deputy stationed near I-90 and Evergreen Road, an area known for reckless driving and racing, heard a loud vehicle approaching. The deputy identified the vehicle as a ‘newer’ Ford Mustang, which was speeding west on I-90. The driver, later identified as Komarov, was weaving through traffic at high speeds.
The deputy pursued the Mustang past Pines Road, noting the absence of a rear license plate on the vehicle. Despite attempts to initiate a traffic stop with police lights, Komarov accelerated to speeds exceeding 115 mph, attempting to evade capture.
Air 1 Helicopter Assists in Apprehension
As the chase continued past Argonne Road towards Broadway Avenue, both vehicles reached speeds over 120 mph in a 60 mph zone. Recognizing the potential danger, the deputy ceased the ground pursuit, allowing the Air 1 helicopter to take over tracking the suspect’s vehicle in real time.
Air 1 monitored Komarov’s movements as he exited at 2nd Street, continued westbound, and eventually parked near the Liberty Park Library. Komarov then abandoned his vehicle and attempted to flee on foot.
Deputies, guided by Air 1’s surveillance, located Komarov on Magnolia Street, just south of E. 5th Avenue. The keys to the Mustang were found in his pants pocket, further linking him to the vehicle.
Legal Consequences
Komarov was transported and booked into the Spokane County Jail. He faces charges of Attempting to Elude a Police Vehicle, a felony, and Reckless Driving, a misdemeanor. This incident underscores the importance of coordinated efforts between ground units and aerial support in ensuring public safety.
