Spokane County, Wash. – A tragic shooting on Tuesday left one Spokane County sheriff’s deputy dead and another critically injured while responding to a domestic‑violence call. The incident unfolded when deputies answered a report that a woman had fled to a neighbor’s house, claiming her brother had shot her.
Suspect armed and under active warrant
County officials said the suspect, who already had an active felony arrest warrant, was known to possess multiple firearms. Deputies feared additional victims could be inside the residence, prompting the deployment of a SWAT team to assist.
Gunfire erupts as SWAT attempts to breach
According to Spokane County Sheriff John Nowels, SWAT officers approached the home and attempted to breach the door when the gunman opened fire from inside. “SWAT team members and deputies approached the house, attempted to breach the door and were met with gunfire,” Nowels told reporters.
Deputies returned fire and were able to pull the two wounded officers to safety. Both deputies, along with the female victim who suffered non‑life‑threatening injuries, were rushed to a local hospital.
Fatalities discovered on the property
Investigators later found one person dead inside the home and another body in the yard. The suspect was also discovered dead on the property. Identities of the deceased have not been released.
On Wednesday, the sheriff’s office confirmed that one of the injured deputies succumbed to his injuries. He is survived by his wife and two children. The department praised his service, stating, “Although we know our deputies knew the risks, they bravely moved toward danger to protect others they did not know. They did this with honor and with an unwavering sense of duty to their oath to serve and protect the citizens of Spokane County; they heroically placed themselves in mortal danger.”
Second deputy remains on life support
The second deputy remains on life support, though officials do not expect him to survive. The department added, “As an organ donor, arrangements are being made, and he will continue to serve others with the gift of life.”
This heartbreaking event underscores the dangers law‑enforcement officers face daily to keep families safe. Spokane County officials continue to support the families of the fallen and injured deputies, and they are reviewing the incident to ensure lessons are learned for future responses.
