Sioux Falls city officials announced a $65.1 million budget for highways and streets in 2026, targeting pavement repairs, roadway expansions and safer pedestrian access across the metropolitan area. The funding supports both neighborhood‑level maintenance and larger state‑partnered projects that will improve traffic flow and reduce congestion.
Neighborhood Street Work
Brad Ludens, the city’s principal engineer, described the street construction program as a blend of preservation, rehabilitation, expansion and reconstruction projects designed to sustain and grow Sioux Falls’ transportation network. Crews completed asphalt overlay on 260 blocks and applied slurry seal to another 890 blocks this year. Street operations manager Dustin Hanson said the work is intended to add five to seven years of additional life to the existing streets, extending the usefulness of the city’s road assets.
Major Interchange Projects
The state Department of Transportation (SDDOT) is also advancing several high‑profile projects. The I‑229 and Cliff Avenue interchange is scheduled to reopen on November 20 with three lanes in each direction, while the second phase of South Veterans Parkway is expected to open on November 6. Area engineer Harry Johnston explained that the added lanes should markedly improve congestion once the projects are fully open to traffic.
Continued Work Into 2027
City and state officials emphasized that the road improvement effort is ongoing. While many projects will be completed this year, additional phases and new initiatives are planned to continue into 2027, ensuring that Sioux Falls’ road network remains reliable for residents and businesses alike.
