Steven Spielberg’s ‘Disclosure Day’ has opened with $44 million in domestic theaters, according to studio estimates. The film, which marks Spielberg’s return to the subject of alien life, collected $92.9 million worldwide over its first weekend.
A Strong Start
The movie’s performance was seen as a solid start, with a ‘B’ CinemaScore and 80% fresh reviews on Rotten Tomatoes. ‘It played very, very evenly across all of the U.S. and Canada,’ said Jim Orr, distribution chief for Universal.
The film’s success was driven by an older audience, with 41% of moviegoers aged 45 and up. ‘What’s encouraging is that we had this big an opening with that audience demographic and with the fact that it’s an original film,’ said Orr.
Competition
‘Disclosure Day’ faced competition from the indie horror hit ‘Obsession,’ which continued to surprise with $19 million in ticket sales. The film, directed by Curry Barker, has now grossed $188.3 million in North America and $286.5 million worldwide.
Other notable releases included ‘Scary Movie,’ which dropped to third place with $14.5 million, and ‘Backrooms,’ which added $11.3 million domestically in its third weekend.
