McKinney, TX – A new Indian grocery destination is on the way. Spices of India, a family‑owned retailer that has served Oklahoma City for more than three decades, announced plans to open a 15,600‑square‑foot store and food court at the Plaza at Fort Buckner retail center in 2027.
Local families gain a one‑stop shop for South Asian staples
Owners Raj and Nita Patel said the store will stock a broad range of South Asian ingredients, including spices, rice, flours, lentils, beans, fresh produce, dairy, frozen foods, snacks, and ready‑made items such as roti, samosas and puff pastries. The adjoining food court will offer breakfast, lunch and dinner options, with dine‑in, takeout, delivery and catering services.
“Collin County is home to a large and growing Indian and South Asian community, and many families now drive to Frisco and Plano to find the ingredients they cook with at home,” the Patels explained in an emailed statement. “We want to be the place where they can get everything in one trip, from fresh produce and spices to a hot meal at our food court. We also want to welcome neighbors who are new to Indian food.”
Decades of experience bring confidence to the McKinney market
The Patels have operated Spices of India in Oklahoma City for more than 35 years, moving through several locations as the business expanded. Their website notes that the Oklahoma store now carries over 20,000 products, a testament to the couple’s deep knowledge of South Asian culinary needs. “Our staff will be happy to help anyone find ingredients, suggest a dish or explain what to try first,” they added. “We have run this kind of store for the Oklahoma City community and we look forward to becoming part of the McKinney community.”
Strategic placement within a growing retail hub
The Plaza at Fort Buckner is undergoing its second phase of development. The first phase introduced popular eateries such as Torchy’s Tacos, Cava, Dave’s Hot Chicken, and Frost Bank. The second phase, which will include Spices of India, also features a Dave & Buster’s that opened earlier this year and an EoS Fitness gym.
The retail center sits at the northeast corner of University Drive and Hardin Boulevard, a high‑traffic intersection that has become a focal point for new commercial activity in Collin County. The Seitz Group, a North Texas‑based commercial real‑estate developer, is leading the project and has previously overseen development at the other three corners of the intersection.
What the opening means for local families and businesses
For the growing Indian and South Asian population in McKinney and the surrounding area, the new store promises to reduce travel time and expense by providing a local source for hard‑to‑find ingredients and ready‑made meals. It also offers an opportunity for non‑South Asian residents to explore new culinary traditions, supporting cultural exchange and community cohesion.
From an economic perspective, the addition of Spices of India contributes to job creation, both in the store itself and in the food‑court operations. The development aligns with the city’s broader strategy to attract diverse retailers that meet the needs of a changing demographic while bolstering the local tax base.
Looking ahead
Construction timelines have not been released, but the Patels confirmed that the store and food court are slated for a 2027 opening. As the project moves forward, city officials and the Seitz Group will continue to coordinate on permitting, infrastructure, and community outreach to ensure a smooth rollout.
McKinney residents can anticipate a new culinary hub that celebrates family, faith, and the freedom to enjoy a wide variety of foods—all hallmarks of the community‑first spirit that defines the city.
