The Los Angeles Sparks left the Moda Center with a hard-fought 106-101 victory over the Portland Fire on Sunday, August 2, surviving a stiff challenge from the home side to pick up a crucial road win in what proved to be a high-scoring affair.
Dearica Hamby was the engine driving Los Angeles throughout the contest, finishing with 23 points and 10 rebounds to post a double-double that proved essential to the Sparks’ five-point margin of victory. Her ability to contribute on both ends of the floor gave Los Angeles a reliable interior presence that Portland struggled to contain for long stretches of the game.
Erica Wheeler ran the Sparks’ offense with precision, distributing the ball to the tune of eight assists and helping fuel a team total of 33 assists on the night — a figure that underscored just how fluid and connected Los Angeles was in its offensive execution. The Sparks shot an impressive 52 percent from the field overall, going 39-for-75, but it was their three-point shooting that truly separated them from the Fire. Los Angeles connected on 16 of 29 attempts from beyond the arc, a blistering 55 percent clip that kept Portland from ever fully seizing control of the game.
The Fire were far from passive, however. Bridget Carleton put together a standout performance for Portland, leading all scorers with 24 points while also hauling in 11 rebounds for a double-double of her own. Carleton’s effort kept the Fire competitive deep into the fourth quarter, and her combination of scoring and rebounding gave Portland a legitimate star-level presence to build around. Point guard Carla Leite was equally active in facilitating the offense, finishing with eight assists to match Wheeler’s total for Los Angeles.
Despite Carleton’s heroics and Leite’s playmaking, Portland could not overcome the Sparks’ efficiency advantage. Los Angeles also made its trips to the free-throw line count, converting 12 of 14 attempts for an 86 percent mark, adding reliable points in moments when the game was tightest. The Sparks grabbed 32 total rebounds — including nine on the offensive glass — giving them additional possessions that helped sustain their lead when Portland threatened to close the gap.
Los Angeles did commit 14 total turnovers on the night, a number that gave the Fire opportunities to chip away at the deficit. Portland took advantage of those miscues at times, keeping the final margin respectable at five points, but the Sparks’ shooting efficiency ultimately proved too much to overcome.
The Sparks also showed defensive tenacity, recording eight steals and five blocks to disrupt Portland’s rhythm at key moments throughout the contest. That combination of defensive activity and elite three-point shooting made Los Angeles a difficult opponent to solve for the Fire’s coaching staff.
For Portland, the loss at home at the Moda Center is a tough result, but Carleton’s 24-point, 11-rebound effort and Leite’s eight-assist night offer genuine building blocks as the Fire look ahead. The Fire will need to find answers for opponents who can shoot the three at a high volume and percentage if they hope to protect their home floor going forward.
Los Angeles, meanwhile, can take significant confidence from this performance — particularly its three-point shooting and ball movement — as the Sparks continue to push for positioning in the WNBA standings.
