SpaceX to Build $100 Billion Spaceport in Vermilion Parish, Creating 3,000 Jobs

Vermilion Parish residents will soon see a massive new aerospace hub rise on the banks of the Gulf. SpaceX announced Tuesday that it will invest $100 billion to build a “Starbase, Louisiana” spaceport near Pecan Island, a development that the Trump administration and Governor Jeff Landry say will bring lasting prosperity to the coastal region.

State incentives pave the way

During the 2026 legislative session, Republican lawmakers passed a package of tax incentives and liability protections aimed at attracting large aerospace projects. House Bill 1088, now Act 190, creates a sales‑tax rebate for facilities that pledge at least $1 billion in capital investment and 200 permanent jobs. The rebate can run for 20 years and be renewed for another decade. SpaceX has confirmed it will qualify for this program.

Additional legislation, including Act 102, expands Louisiana’s Industrial Tax Exemption Program to cover aerospace manufacturing, launch infrastructure, and propulsion systems. Lawmakers also exempted certain aerospace records from public‑records requests and enacted Act 343, which gives aerospace companies a streamlined process to dismiss certain lawsuits and recover attorney fees.

Economic impact and job creation

The proposed campus will feature five launch complexes, each with two pads, plus facilities for propellant production, power generation, vehicle processing, and worker housing. Construction is slated to begin in 2027, with the first launch targeted for as early as 2029.

SpaceX projects 3,000 direct jobs over the next decade, averaging $92,600 in annual salary. Louisiana Economic Development estimates an additional 8,100 indirect jobs could follow, boosting the local economy. Under a payment‑in‑lieu‑of‑taxs agreement, SpaceX will pay Vermilion Parish $25 million annually for 25 years, plus $20 million upfront, generating more than $820 million in local payments, according to LED. The company will also contribute $25 million to the Community Foundation of Acadiana.

Community and environmental considerations

While the project promises economic growth, some residents and environmental groups have voiced concerns about noise, wildlife disruption, and the impact on coastal marshes. SpaceX says it is working with the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries, the Coastal Protection and Restoration Authority, and other state agencies, and plans to hold community meetings in the coming months.

Federal Aviation Administration licensing will still be required, and the process may trigger federal environmental reviews and safety examinations. Nevertheless, Governor Landry emphasized that the project marks a shift from extractive industries to a lasting, high‑tech future for Louisiana’s Gulf Coast.

National significance

The Trump administration has praised the partnership as a win for American innovation and job creation, aligning with its broader goal of strengthening the nation’s aerospace capabilities. By supporting SpaceX’s ambitious plan, the administration hopes to cement the United States’ leadership in commercial spaceflight and secure a permanent human presence beyond Earth.
